Lectionary for August 2025

The month of August deepens the solar themes of dominion, but begins to hint at descent—of waning light, judgement upon harvests, and the refinement of spiritual fire. These readings highlight Marduk’s judicial, redemptive, and protective dimensions.

Saturday, August 2
Text: Fifty Names of Marduk (Name 12 – ZULUM)

“Provider of bounty, keeper of storehouses,
Who makes the fields to yield and the granaries to overflow.”

Reflection:
The greatness of Marduk is not merely in destruction of chaos, but in provision. He establishes rhythm, fertility, and increase. He is not distant from the earth. Even as he governs the stars, he fills the barns of the righteous.

Chant:
Zulum, Giver of Grain,
May Thy hand be upon our harvest.
Feed the faithful, fill our offerings.
Let not famine dwell within the walls of Thy servants.

Saturday, August 9
Text: Enuma Elish, Tablet III

“He created a net to encircle Tiamat…
And with it he bound the chaos that surged like the sea.”

Reflection:
Marduk acts not randomly, but with tools crafted to purpose. The net is not for violence, but restraint. The wise use of force is mercy. Let the practitioner discern when to bind and when to release, for every tool must serve sacred order.

Invocation:
Net-Bearer, Binder of the Serpent,
Lay Thy cord upon my fears.
Bind that which rages within me,
And cast it into the abyss without form.

Saturday, August 16
Text: Hymn of Marduk’s Protection

“When Marduk walks among the people,
evil flees and falsehood hides.
His robe is flame, and his glance silences the liars.”

Reflection:
The nearness of Marduk is terror to the wicked and protection to the just. He is not merely king—he is presence, clarity, and fire. Let none who invoke him do so with duplicity. The god of order discerns the heart, and walks only with the honest.

Chant:
O Marduk, Flame-Robed King,
Let Thy steps be heard among us.
Banish deceit, expel shadows.
Let only truth remain where Thou hast passed.

Saturday, August 23
Text: Fifty Names of Marduk (Name 40 – TUTU)

“Restorer of life, builder of foundations.
He who renews the ruined cities and heals the broken.”

Reflection:
Even in desolation, Marduk builds again. Under the name Tutu, he brings renewal to the places laid low. Ruin is not the end, but the site of transformation. The priest who calls on Tutu must be ready to rebuild and not mourn endlessly.

Invocation:
Tutu, Restorer of Foundations,
Take up the dust of what was lost
And breathe upon it the breath of Thy spirit.
Raise my temple again, O Healer of Ruins.

Saturday, August 30
Text: Enuma Elish, Conclusion

“Let the people of the land continually remember Marduk,
Let them speak his names and celebrate his deeds.
Let them pass down the knowledge to the children.”

Reflection:
The work of devotion is memory. The name of Marduk must not be forgotten in silence or broken by neglect. To speak of him is to preserve order, to name him is to renew the cosmos. Let every rite be done in remembrance and declaration.

Chant:
We remember Thee, O Name-Bearer,
O King of Ages and Scribe of Destiny.
Let our children call Thee in the night,
And our temples echo with Thy Name forever.
