Lectionary for July 2025

The seasonal movement of July, marked by heat, intensity, and fullness of solar power, is reflected in this cycle—emphasising dominion, sovereignty, and judgement.

Text: Fifty Names of Marduk (Name 6 – NARILUGGALDIMMERANKIA)

“He is the mightiest among the gods, the king who speaks and it is done.
With his word, the destinies of the gods and men are written and sealed.”

Reflection:
In this name, Marduk is Law incarnate—not as decree alone, but as ontological command. The cosmos is sustained by his utterance. The true priest listens before speaking and knows that ritual begins in silence, broken only by deliberate invocation.

Chant:
O King of the Sealed Word,
Nariluggaldimmerankia,
Fix my breath to Thy decree.
Write my name on the line of life,
And judge me by the law that hung the stars.

Saturday, July 12
Text: Enuma Elish, Tablet V

“He constructed stations for the great gods,
He fixed their astral images, the stars of the Zodiac he created.
He ordered the year, setting out its divisions.”

Reflection:
Time itself is a temple with twelve gates. Marduk, as architect of the heavens, ordered not only space but time, dividing it that it might serve the rites. Let each month be a wall, each day a stone, and each hour a sacred doorway.

Invocation:
O Divider of the Ages,
Who hung Time like a garland around the neck of Night,
Set my steps within Thy measured chambers.
Make of my hours a procession of honour.

Text: Hymn to Marduk as Asalluhi

“O mighty incantation-priest of the gods,
He who knows the secret names,
Who speaks and demons are silenced,
Who utters the word of binding and all obey.”

Reflection:
As Asalluhi, Marduk is the exorcist of heaven—master of names, restrainer of unclean forces. True power lies not in spectacle but in knowledge rightly applied. One does not dominate spirits; one commands because one understands. Knowledge sanctified by devotion becomes power.

Chant:
Asalluhi, Binder of Chaos,
Holder of the True Name,
Let Thy voice be my defence.
Speak through me and cast away the devourers.
Sanctify my tongue with the word of fire.

Saturday, July 26
Text: Enuma Elish, Tablet VII

“Fifty names they gave him, fifty powers they bestowed.
Let them be invoked by priests and kings,
Let his name be exalted in all temples forever.”

Reflection:
The naming of Marduk is a royal liturgy. Each name is a gate, a key, a mask of dominion. The priest does not call upon Marduk as if summoning an image—he enters the name, walks within it, and becomes participant in the divine nature of ordered power.

Chant:
I call Thee by the Fifty Names,
But Thou art One in Majesty.
Reveal Thy presence under the veil of title,
And let me not falter before Thy throne.
Great Marduk, accept my voice among Thy sanctuaries.
